The History of Fishtales Restaurant & Nightclub

Fishtales opened its doors more than 20 years ago at 3355 NE 33rd Street in Fort Lauderdale and quickly became a beloved South Florida landmark.
Founded and still proudly owned by Cathy Vassallo, the venue has grown from a neighborhood seafood spot into a vibrant, multifaceted destination that seamlessly blends restaurant, nightclub, and community hub.
Cathy, a Philadelphia native from a close-knit Italian family, brought her heritage and passion for hospitality to Florida. Drawing on generations of family recipes, she infused the menu with authentic Italian-American soul: tender homemade meatballs simmered in rich Sunday gravy, legendary Philly cheesesteaks made with perfectly imported cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes.
These classics sit comfortably alongside the freshest local seafood—crab dishes, daily catches from local fishermen—and American favorites, creating a menu that feels both comforting and exciting, warm, welcoming roots.

These street parties transform the area into a full-blown celebration: live bands playing in the street, pop-up bars, a bustling beer garden, and those famous Philly cheesesteaks flying out the door. What began as a fun weekend gathering has become a signature Fort Lauderdale experience that draws locals and visitors alike.

Beyond the food and festivities, Cathy’s biggest legacy is her deep commitment to charity work.
FISHTALES has hosted countless fundraisers, charity events, and benefits over the years, supporting causes close to home such as:
- The Pantry of Broward (food drives and toy collections)
- My Family Matters Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (families battling childhood cancer)
- Scuba 4 Good and Grateful Divers
- Holiday events and meatball mania parties for seniors and local families
Cathy’s hands-on approach—greeting guests, overseeing the kitchen, and personally championing every cause—has kept Fishtales feeling like family for more than two decades. It’s a place where Philadelphia grit meets Florida sunshine, where great food, strong drinks, live music, and genuine hospitality come together under one roof.Today, Fishtales remains a woman-owned gem in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, still evolving while staying rooted in the same values Cathy brought with her from the start: good times, great food, and giving back.Stop by, say hello to Cathy, grab a plate (or a drink), hit the dance floor, and become part of the Fishtales family. The party’s been going strong for over 20 years—and it’s only getting better.
